26th March – Cock Watching.

Posted: April 6, 2011 in Bird Watching

Here is a quick run down of yesterday`s events for the website:- Me,Steve Brown,Chris Jepson-Brown and Bob Kenworthy left Norden,Rochdale at 6-30am.We headed up into Kirby Stephen and were all amazed at what we saw flying around,2 Scarlet Macaws! In the area there were a few flocks of Fieldfare heading north. Then off to a moorland location in search of Black Grouse. We noticed that the temperature had dropped as we began our quest. After searching the “regular” area`s we broadened our scope and were rewarded with prolonged,if a little distant, veiws of a “Black Cock”.

A few calling/singing Snipe were then added along with Red Grouse,Golden Plover and Pheasant. We had a little stroll along a hillside path when a male and a female Black Grouse flew right past us,excellent! Due to the early hour we had to abandon our visit to the Tan Hill Inn for refreshment and headed for Leighton Moss.Female Marsh Harrier,Marsh Tit,lots of Chiff-Chaffs and a Blackcap in the marshy area along with Spotted Redshank and lots of other waders at the Allen and Eric Morcambe hides.

Another Cock

The report of a Shore Lark and a few Wheatear took us of off to the Warton (lunar landscape)area,We were soon rewarded with 3 stunning Wheatear along the track, but despite extensive searching could`nt connect with the Shore Lark. Then a report from Steve Kovacs alerted us to the Lesser Scaup still being present at Marshside,Southport. With our hours in the field begining to run out Steve took up the baton and headed at pace for Southport. As soon as we looked onto the Junction Pool the Lesser Scaup was there, a new bird for Chris Jepson Brown,15 Avocets completed our trip to Southport. Our last port of call was to Haughton Green Pool, near Warrington, to see 4 summer plumaged Black Necked Grebe`s,quite stunning!
